OK, changing mixer settings does not help; there must be a more
fundamental problem with the driver or the hardware.

OK, so the hardware works.

To keep yourself entertained until you get the phonograph, you could
post the output of these commands:

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | head

grep '.*' /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/*
