The device names would be the same since I would copy /etc/fstab over
to what would become the new "/" partition.

Hence once my new hard drive becomes hda .. hda1, hda5, etc. would
be in sync' with the partition table.

As to labels thanks for the tip. 

I'll have to double-check if any of my current partitions are labeled.
