I just discovered a workaround.
On partitioning: select manual
select configure raid; keep partition layout and configure raid? --> yes
Action: finish (don't create md device, it already exists!)

The installer will return to the main partitioning window and voila,
shows the lvm and has the selectable item "Configure the Logical Volume
Manager".

- From there on installation works fine.

(...until I boot with the amd64-kernel, but that is another story...)
