were you on a fully up-to-date etch when it was working previously?
What have you changed on your system between the time it was working
and now? 

the /dev for the scanner should be created by udev. you could try
running 

udev-trigger 

and see if it shows up then. probably watch syslog at the same time. 

also, watch syslog (tail -f /var/log/syslog) while you unplug and
replug the scanner. You should see some activity. posting the relevant
results would be helpful.
