You will need to install a chess playing engine. I recommend crafty.
You will find the following commands essential when investigating
packages: (eg eboard, or packages relating to chess)
apt-cache show eboard
apt-cache show crafty
apt-cache search crafty
apt-cache search chess
To see files installed by a package:
dpkg -L eboard
Read the documentation under /usr/share/doc/eboard
