I haven't had any problem burning dual layer DVD's, and didn't have to do anything exceptional to do so... 
i use growisofs and it does the "splitting" for you.  Playback was fine.  I haven't checked in a while but
dual layer blanks were not cheap, that was the only drawback i found.
