Hi, Ralph. You were right. I don't have installed util-linux but I can't
installed either without major change to the package system [according
to apt]... I supposed I uninstalled it without knowing when playing
around with the package system. I think I'm going to reinstall etch from
scratch.

Please reply to the list so others may benefit or provide more help.
Perhaps you should try aptitude instead of apt for better handling of
dependencies.  It may work.
