Here is what I see (on Etch with Java5)

	Java(TM) Plug-in 1.5.0_10-b03
		File name: libjavaplugin_oji.so
		Java(TM) Plug-in 1.5.0_10

And about 35 mime types listed under that.

IIRC, all I did was install sun-java5-jre and sun-java5-plugin 
from the non-free repository and then execute:

# update-java-alternatives --set java-1.5.0-sun
