By default, IMAP clients usually only retrieve message headers.
Icedove/Thunderbird is no different in this respect.  The setting which
relates to looking into every folder when it connects is called "Check
for new messages."  The way to change it is to right click on the
offending folder, select "Properties" and uncheck the "Check this folder
for new messages" option.  Unfortunately, I do not know of a way to do
this once and have it apply to all folders, so you may have to do this
quite a bit depending on how many folders you have.  Anyhow, that will
prevent Icedove from trying to inspect every single folder in your
account to see if it received new messages.
