As far as the video capabilities of different hardware is concerned; I
can suggest:

apt-get install mythtv-doc 

and have a read through it. Any other -doc packages, like mplayer-doc,
are also interesting reading. There are links to hardware compatibility
lists etc.

Any other thoughts?
