You're right, in this case.

The only reason that "apt-cache search glxgears" is that the
mesa-utils full description mentions glxgears.  If it did not, then
it would not have returned a package name.

Is "common sense" really valid?
For example, it is "common sense" to white-power racists that
whites are superior to blacks, and that those with brown skins
are mud people.
