xsane apparently frozeup scanning scsi bus

Both instances of xsane are frozen up in Disk Read (/proc/.../stats)
or as top reports, in kernel function scsi_bloc. Now, as far as I can
recall, the kernel documentation stated a process won't actually
receive its SIGKILL until after it's complete with a block read.

Is there any hope in sight for terminating these processes?

Why are they stalled on this function?

Should I consider/attempt to debug the kernel?

Thanks,

Scott Edwards
