Use the Debian AMD64 distribution - it should have everything you could
possibly need. I have a machine running 2 x Opteron with 2.5G of memory
at work. Works fine: 64 bit clean: has most software anyone could want -
if you need maths software, for example, or genome sequencing stuff or
... chances are that Debian is the only Linux which bothers to package
it.
