The memory parameter in grub cannot make the kernel see more memory than
it is capable of supporting.

Your kernel, 2.6.8-2-386, is the stock 'i386' Sarge kernel which won't
support >1GB RAM.  Try the stock 686 kernel instead:

apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686
