Somewhat related to your question:

I ran Fedora Core 4 for a while, and it comes with a very
complete all-GNU all-the-time Java setup.

I think various Debian folks want(ed) to try and do something
similar, and it seemed to have spawned this page:

I wonder what happened with the DevJam?
