X.org does not start properly after upgrade
Hi
list,
Yesterday I installed all upgradable packages with
aptitude on a sid system. I guess I had gotten too cocky given that
everything has worked seamlessly on my Debian system since I switched
from SuSe a few years ago...in any case, I wound up installing X.org
without really thinking enough about it beforehand, and now the X server
does not start properly.
Right before the login screen
appears (gdm), the monitor flickers a bit, and then freezes with a
message that an X server could not be started. Mouse and keyboard are
unresponsive.
I looked into my system with Knoppix and found
the /etc/X11/xorg.conf is basically an identical copy of the
corresponding Xf84 config-4 file. So I do
not understand where to look to get X.org running or at least to get
xf86 back.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Peter
