I have a DSL modem that includes a router/firewall. When I got DSL I put
it in bridge mode and used an old Aptiva as a router/firewall. All went
well until the Aptiva had a hardware problem a few weeks ago. While
repairing the Aptiva I switched the modem back to router mode. Lots of DNS
errors, slow throughput, traceroute stopped working... Finally got the
parts and went back to the Aptiva. No more problems.

Also, the modem's "firewall" falls over when you poke it with nmap.
