If you run "startx" as root, you'll run X as root, which is generally
considered to be a bad thing.
If you run "startx" as a normal user, you'll run X as the normal user,
which is what you want.

The second and third ways will have to be done as root; that will start
the GUI login screen, from which you can then log into X as a normal user.
