to see which junk is taking up the space
du /root /lib /etc /dev /bin /sbin
256MB is (2x) more than enough for / when you have /home, /var, /tmp, /usr
-- something in /root is probably biting your butt
-- you probably are googling as root .. don't do that
- turn off cache and all the other bookmarks for root
