Hi David,

The problem is that Mathematica 5.1 requires glibc 2.3, while Woody
(Debian stable) has glibc 2.2. AFAIK, Mathematica 5.0 works fine on Woody.

Also, depending on what you're doing with Matlab, Octave (which you can
install via apt-get) may be an acceptable substitute. Octave is a Matlab
workalike, but there are some places where it is incompatible or missing
features.
