While it's nice that it comes prepackaged and repo'd, that is an
outdated version of NVU.  0.81 is currently out (Beta3? or something of
the impending 1.0 release).

Download NVU from the NVU website.  http://www.nvu.com/download.html .
There is a tarball for Linspire 5.0 beta, which is a Debian derivative
running 2.6.10 and gcc 3.3.5, so it should run well on Sid and Sarge
(runs great for me on Sid).  Simply download, extract to /opt, and place
a symbolic link (ln -s /opt/nvu-0.81/nvu /usr/bin/nvu).  You should be
set.
