You can also rescue using a regular debian install disk with parameters like:

rescue root=/dev/hda1 or whatever.
Check  addional options, or some menu like that in the debian disk.

If you can CD-boot the system, use a Knoppix CD-ROM instead of a
floppy.  A 30-second search found this page:
