that's one option. on my box /boot is shared between the different
systems.

in my config:
grub in the mbr uses menu.lst from /boot/grub, on selection launches
grub in the / of the selected system using menu.lst from /grub and a
kernel from /boot.
with grub the partition info comes from (/boot)/grub/menu.lst:
# get kernel, ... from /dev/hda5
root (hd0,4)
# start vmlinuz-2.6.8.1 with /dev/hda6 as /
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.8.1 root=/dev/hda6
