Newbie Having Much Trouble Getting Deb 2.4.18-bf2.4 To Work
I've reinstalled about four or five times trying to get rid of the errors
showm on bootup and on the syslog. I've spent about a month with the
discussion group at linmodems.com getting my modem to work, finally. If it
sound like I'm crying over the user unfriendlyness of Linux OS, Oh well.
Since the last couple of reinstalls, the first was with a bunch of Net
programs installed for first time, I lost my Debian host name, now it's
(none) and I think its affecting most all of the software, especially the
Mozilla Email client. I tried using `hostname` to put Debian back in the
prompt with no error messages but (none) stays for the domain name on the
terminal prompt.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this so I can use my email program. I'm an
fairly experience windows user but know nothing about Linux and have never
set up a network. I have windows set up for ISP supplied IP addresses. I
know that my DNS supplied IP address is static and that my domain name
address changes each time I connect. The peer ISP addresses are also
static. I get a network setup popup on boot that I've tried to set up many
times and always failed. This is a lot to digest but I think its all
pertinet. Please help.
Also, I edited /etc/apt/sources.list in ordet to update and upgrade the
system. When I do `apt-get update`, I get the following message:
E: Malformaed line 26 in sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list(dist).
I'm using nano, and counted the lines(probably in error), but couldn't find
the problem even after doing several times. On the last few lines, I was
just trying out adding the entire mirror list line just to see what happens.
It seems I have a lot of error messages using terminal commands all of which
are not syntax issues. I have attached the sources.list if someone wants to
look. Pleasee note that any thing above the ftp: listings were done by the
system. I put every thing else in with nano. I hope someone can help me fix
this so I can update and upgrade.
