  In /boot is your new kernel listed as vmlinuz or maybe its
  vmlinuz-2.6.8?
  
  In my /boot there are
  vmlinuz-2.4.27-1-686
  vmlinuz-2.6.7
  vmlinuz-2.6.7-1-k7
