What is the nice value of X? (check with top) It might cause problems
with 2.6 if it's still at -10, you can dpkg-reconfigure it and change
it to 0 if it is. You might want to check out other processes and
their memory usage too. Lately I had a similar problem and it was
essentially a runaway vidwhacker process gorging up my ram.
