Sometimes this means your sound devices aren't set up; this happened to me sometimes when I was switching between commercial oss and alsa. I solved this by running the MAKEDEV.snd script that came with some of the kernels; I think that stopped somewhere in the 2.6 series but I saved the script. -- Cheryl "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
