Computer not running at highest possible speed

Dear Debian-User Mailing List Subscribers,

I've been running Debian for quite some time now on m\any different machines, I would not call myself a Linux expert but i do know my way around, and use it mostly for my Computer Science Education and ofcourse to support the Open Source Community. I've been running Debian on a P1 333Mhz, a P2 500Mhz, an iBook 400Mhz, a P3 1Ghz and most recently I installed Debian sarge on a P4 2Ghz machine using the new debian-installer. After setting up this new machine, which previously ran windows XP, I started noticing that many processes were not running at optimal capacity. When I play games the graphics are slow, and I usually have to turn down a lot of options, for example, when i play Battle for Wesnoth, during the automated sequences the scrolling is not smooth, and waiting for my turn takes forever. This was never a problem when it ran Windows. Even firefox takes a while to open a new tab, and opening new windows in Gnome takes longer than one would expect. I talked to a friend about this problem, and he told me, that he noticed the same issues running Debian on a Toshiba laptop. He switched to Fedora Core 2 and now does not have the same lag in everyday use. I am not willing to switch to Fedora because I do not like working with RPMs but the thought of switching to a different distribution has crawled through my mind. Now before I make my final decision I decided to subscribe to this mailing list once again (i was subscribed when i first started out using linux) and see if anybody had any ideas why this is happening? If it's a problem with my kernel configuration, or with my video card or maybe the way I partitioned my box. So if anybody has any ideas, or any tips on how i could get my computer to run at it's highest capacity please let me know.

Thanks in Advance, Anything will probably help!

Jule
