Did you install x-window-system first !?
apt-cache search x-window-system
apt-get install x-window-system
apt-get install xserver-xfree86
apt-get install xfree86-common
apt-get install xfs
maybe some fonts - apt-cache search xfont
after that you have to configure your X
the file is in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
try with xf86config
or xf86cfg
after you configure correct your X then start gdm !
