under kde run "control center" which you can find in the menu, search
"file association". Then, for example, you want to open *.mp3 by
mplayer, in the "known types" item, select "audio", and you can see
"x-mp3". Add mplayer under "Application Perference Order"; you may see
may programs here, but the first is the default.
