You can't have the cake and eat it, too. The user has two choices:
(a) Live with ugly tab-width=8 but enjoy pretty 80 cols.
(b) Enjoy pretty tab-width=4 and live with ugly 65 cols.
Your proposal prohibits (b).
I don't see how it could be bad to give a user more choices.
