Well, I was finally able to get sound working satisfactorily again. But,
it wasn't with a new 2.4.25 or 2.4.26 kernel like I was originally
trying. Nor is it using Alsa.

I ended up going back to the 2.4.20 kernel I had been using. This put me
back to the old esd frustrations that made me want to switch to Alsa.
However, I found the upgraded KDE its running now (or has it for several
versions and I didn't noticed it?) has an option to tell KDE to use ESD
for sound.

This gets rid of the sound conflict and lets my users use the window
manager they prefer (I like iceWM, but they like KDE...) and still be
able to listen to audio cds, play mp3s in xmms, have gaim play sounds
when someone logs in, and hear the bell ring when they push the wrong
button in their KDE game at the same time.

That and it looks like the other upgrades that were applied to this
machine have helped as well - like newer versions of esd, etc. To the
person who had mentioned avoiding esd due to extra CPU load... I haven't
noticed any appreciable difference between using esd or the plain oss
driver standalone. However, this is a AMD 2600 w/ 512MB of ram.
(Besides, very few things look like much of a cpu load when they're
running next to KDE. :-)
