Have you ever felt a hard drive that's been running for a long time
without stopping? They get hot! It's a moving part, and it moves
*fast*, so it's bound to generate heat.
Koolance does make hard drive heatsinks, though.

They run hot. If you want to balance noise and heat versus hard drive
longevity, have the disks spin down after so many minutes of
Linux. You can find a worse OS, but it costs more.
