Have you ever felt a hard drive that's been running for a long time
without stopping?  They get hot!  It's a moving part, and it moves
*fast*, so it's bound to generate heat.

They run hot.  If you want to balance noise and heat versus hard drive
longevity, have the disks spin down after so many minutes of
inactivity.
