Only when you boot using it. Booting from floppy doesn't.

Secondly, this is boot/grub/menu.lst on hd0,2:

root (hd0,2)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.5-1-686 ro root=/dev/hda6
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.5-1-686

So your guess about initrd could be true.

Have you already tried a kernel without an initial ramdisk? If this solves the problem, just recreate your ramdisk and you should be fine.
