graphic card problems

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

I've tying to configure xfree86 on a old PIII450, it running Sarge. It
has a on-board graphics card, the output from lspci is

pcilib: Cannot open /sys/bus/pci/devices
0000:00:00.0 Host Bridge: Intel Corp. 82810 GMCh [Graphics Memory
Controller Hub] (rev 03)
0000:00:01.0 VGA compatable contrller: Intel Corp. 82810 CGC [Chipset
Graphics Controller] (rev 03)
And a few more devices.

I've run dpkg-reconfigure several time and been through all the options,
the framebuffers option doesn't make any difference. There are no
options in the biso for setting the level of RAM assigned for graphics.

I have a knoppix disk here, and so loaded it, X booted, but I couldn't
use the keyboard for some reason. Hence I couldn't look at any of the
configuration. As Knoppix worked, I know that it can be done. But as I
have already setup the rest of Sarge I don't want to trash it with a
knoppix HD install.

Can any one help?
James
