In case you didn't solve your problem yet: I just finished
a night with a problematic 8139 and tracked it down to
failing autonegotiation. Forcing it to 10Mbit Half duplex
with mii-tool did the trick. 

Another posibility to check would be lspci. This checks 
and identifies your hardware. Mine are show as
