I have encountered the same problem.  I suggest you submit a bug report
using the forms on the Sarge installer web pages.  They are responsive
about these issues and they need the input regarding how many people
are having problems with the installer.  I think you might have the same
problem even if you do not upgrade to unstable.

That was one of the problems that happened to me as well when I did apt-get upgrade (also had problems with the camera after that). My system would no longer see the on-board nVidia NIC, which is connected to the cable modem. Fortunately, she is able to use the on-board 3Com NIC (connected to the LAN and using a Win-98SE box with ICS as her router...which is scheduled for a Linux upgrade via Mepis soon). So at least I haven't lost Internet connectivity.
