That was one of the problems that happened to me as well when I did 
apt-get upgrade (also had problems with the camera after that).  My 
system would no longer see the on-board nVidia NIC, which is connected 
to the cable modem.  Fortunately, she is able to use the on-board 3Com 
NIC (connected to the LAN and using a Win-98SE box with ICS as her 
router...which is scheduled for a Linux upgrade via Mepis soon).  So at 
least I haven't lost Internet connectivity.
