tar/tape

Hello,

I have tried a completely new tape and now it appears I cannot write to
it:

root@genesis:/# dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/zeros count=50 obs=1024 ibs=1024
50+0 records in
50+0 records out
51200 bytes transferred in 0.001761 seconds (29072577 bytes/sec)
root@genesis:/# dd if=/tmp/zeros of=/dev/nst0 ibs=1024 obs=1024 count=50
dd: writing to `/dev/nst0': Input/output error
dd: closing output file `/dev/nst0': Input/output error




This may be absurd be need I format the tape as it's been a long time
since I used one?

They are 150M ddsII tapes.
