Here is your bug:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=227751

I was experiencing Tremendous amounts of Playback Artifacts as well as
the flipping updates... I spent the better part of the Night SUnday
tracking things down.

First I thought it was my network, as both NFS and streamed songs had
bad chirps and artifacts. Then went to play from a "local disk" same
issues.

I then went into Hardware troubleshooting, then I fingered it had to be
the OS. Went looking at Bugs in everything from the kernel to alsa to
mpeg decoding to lame...

Saw a few items relating to playback. Corrupting the sounds.

Reverted to v1.2.8... Voila!
