Looking at the info for debian-user, I don't see anything about it
being exclusive of general-interest stuff. The description itself
implies that the only expectation is that everybody has two things in
common: Debian, and being/wanting to be a user of the same. This
seems to be the general consensus for what's on-topic: You use
Debian, you think other Debian users might find it worth talking about.

Off the top of my head with Gentoo...
Pro: You get optimized everything.
Con: The milliseconds you save with optimization of things that don't
really benefit from it are lost millions of times over in the time it
takes to recompile the world.

Everybody has that compliant with any software. We're just willing to
warn you about the bugs up front instead of pretending they don't
exist, and we *are* a vocal userbase. This is offsetting to some
newbies, understandably: They're coming from waiting for an hour to
speak to someone who is paid on the ability to solve the problem or
ditch the caller as fast as possible, and we're not willing to be
bald-faced liars by claiming our software is perfect.
The best we know how to do? Yes. Perfect? Why bother having mailing
lists then?
