Twm is dependent on menu (>1.5) and that's the packagae which is not
available in HPPA, sorry for the missing info.

Have a look for yourself:
http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=menu&searchon=names&subword=1&case=insensitive&version=stable&release=all

So that means I need the core package but not the "real" package itself,
very well.

What else do I need?

gnome-core
gdm
x-windows-system-core
sawfish-gnome

is that it?

Of course........ first things first.

When I use apt-get install x-windows-system the system brings back

Sorry but the package has unmet dependencies.
x-window-system: Depends: twm but it is not going to be installed
E: Sorry broken packages

When I try to apt-get install twm the system brings back
twm: Depends: menu (>1.5) but it is not installable
E: Sorry broken packages

Well, seems like a "bug" in the dependencies, doesn't it?

Colin, I'm quite fit but I never installed X myself, always with an
installer.

Could you please send me an emial, or give me a link with a Howto install
Gnome (and only gnome) onto my debian system?

That would be rather nice....... normally I just administrate server and I
avoid putting too much trash on the hdd, but this time I really need
graphics and tasksel won't do the job...... HEEEEEEEEEEELP :o)

Greets,
Jens

P.S.: I tried to fire up GNOME already but the server won't start up .
System says much :-) but I think the most important part is fatal server
