Regards LILO, incorrect.
LILO doesn't read ext2. Or any other filesystem.
It directly addresses the kernel by raw disk hardware address. And is
subjec to a number of BIOS restrictions in this respect.
GRUB, by contrast, _can_ read filesystems, and is best described as a
minimal OS which has the basic function of falling on its own sword for
the good of the Emperor Penguin (or other sundry OSs as you may have on
your system).
