Well, if it ain't broke, why fix it? I happen to be running Quake 3
without a hitch on top of XFree86, so it probably has to do with your
nvidia drivers.

Where did you obtain your XFree86 packages, anyways?

In nearly all cases, the fault goes back to the driver. And this is
probably more true if everything else seems to work fine.
