Does adding your user account to the dip group help?

Maybe because the user has no access to the device files. If you use
ide-scsi emulation or scsi cdrom drives, add your user account to the
cdrom group. If you use ide drives without ide-scsi emulation, /don't/
add your user to the disk group. Better switch to ide-scsi emulation,
or maybe change ownership of the cdrom device files (/not/ the hard
disks) to root.cdrom.
