My preferred method - which leaves them all installed and configured -
is to make none of them the default, by editing
/etc/X11/default-display-manager and changing the only line to something
bogus - such as by putting '# ' in front of it, or changing it to 'none'
or something else you find intuitive.
Then any display managers that are installed and configured will try and
start, then decide they're not the default and exit.
