The original purpose of the 2nd ammendment was something like:
"If you think the politicians you've got are assholes now just see what
they'd be like if the populace couldn't shoot them if they acted up."
It's the same reason we have the electoral college, i.e., people's votes
don't *really* count; and we have so many checks and balances. We all
thought you European guys were assholes and we *really* wanted to make
sure our life didn't turn out like yours. No, seriously...
The other thing (and there is no factual reason to believe this is true)
is this: In most of the 1980s and 1990s Europeans laughed at us fat
Americans, and they really were skinnier than us. Now I laugh my ass
off when I read reports about Europe getting fat like us. Face it,
you're just cultural 10 years behind us dirty dawgs. The whole reason
nobody likes America is we are all the people in the world who told the
rest of ya to fuck off, we're leaving :-)
