galeon won't start -- gconfd error?

every time i try to start galeon on this new install of mine (which is
basically a clone of an old install on which galeon *was* working), i
get the following gtk error dialog box:

  Cannot find a schema for galeon preferences.
  Check your gconf setup, look at galeon FAQ for
  more info

i've moved all my setups in my homedir out of the way. i've
apt-gotten removed --purged galeon and reinstalled it. i've looked at
the relevant page of the galeon FAQ[1] and done everything it says.
yet the error persists.

can anyone help me out here?

thanks,

</nori>
