yes they do exist:
brw-rw----    1 root     cdrom     11,   0 Mar 14  2002 /dev/scd0
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            4 Aug 22 11:08 /dev/sr0 -> scd0
crwSrwS---    1 root     scanner   21,   0 Mar 14  2002 /dev/sg0

dmesg gives me that:
Oct 22 23:37:05 looney kernel: hdc: Hewlett-Packard DVD Writer 300, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
Oct 22 23:37:05 looney kernel: ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
Oct 22 23:37:05 looney kernel: hdc: ATAPI 40X DVD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)
Oct 22 23:37:05 looney kernel: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12

what i did not mention on the initial posting is that this is a scsi system (don't know if this has any relevance on this):

	0,2,0	  2) 'SEAGATE ' 'ST39140W        ' '1444' Disk
scsibus1: not used.
scsibus2:
