Are you sure it is not detected or is it that the Knoppix kernel does
not have the correct module available?  In that case, try a newer
kernel.

I had a problem recently when I installed the same Knoppix on a
machine with an Intel motherboard and i845 sound card where KDE was
causing the problem with the sound card.  I can't remember the name of
the module (it was some i810-related one) but the system was so
unstable when I ran KDE that it would sometimes reboot itself.
That stopped when I stopped using KDE and the machine was stable.
