i do have an ATI RADEON graphics card with 256MB DDR


Looks like you're running stable (Woody).  It's likely that your
graphics card isn't supported in the older version of xserver-xfree86 in
Woody.  I would try upgrading to testing (Sarge) -- It has a newer
version of X.

Check lspci output.  My XF86Config-4 was originially set for
slot 1:0:0, but as you can see below, it was on 2:0:0

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R250 If [Radeon 9000] (rev 01)

I gues some mobos put the AGP bus on 1 and others on 2.
